Emerald® Interior/Exterior Waterbased Urethane Trim Enamel

Sherwin-Williams has expanded the Emerald family of products, its finest interior and exterior paints, with the new Emerald® Interior/Exterior Waterbased Urethane Trim Enamel. It’s perfect for cabinet, door and trim projects where hardness, adhesion and durability are primary considerations. Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel delivers the look and feel of an oil-based enamel with the convenience of a waterbased formula. Not only does it perform well inside, it has excellent color and gloss retention for exterior applications. The new product will be available in the first quarter of 2017.

My take on the new Emerald Urethane trim Enamel paint. I've used it twice now on cabinets, but, only in light colors. Comparing it to Pro classic; I can tell it's more durable, does not sag as readily, and it has a nice finishing coat like an oil based product. The urethane makes it suitable for exterior as well. (Basically it's pro industrial WB alkyd urethane.) I strongly believe it's way overpriced though, and the dry time is a little long than the pro classic, which makes it hard for a quick turn-around. Which is why I docked it a star. All-in-all it's a great paint, but I'm definitely not ready to make the switch from PC. (Will consider when I can get it for much cheaper).

First time using it. Was looking for a better product for cabinets. I've used several SW products before and haven't found the perfect one yet. I got a real nice price on the emerald ureathane, so I figured I would give it a shot. Repainted some white cabinets with it. Sanded all the cabinets down real nice. Used a quarter inch white dove roller cover. Finish product came out real nice. I used the semi gloss which didn't have much sheen at all, but had a nice finish to it. Would recommend.

Have been getting sick from this paint. Haven't been able to use the master bedroom as a result for 9 days. Still odiferous.

  1. Just painted our closet with this (solid wood, we built it – not one of those boxed closets, I wouldn’t paint over that). It seems all right. My biggest concern is curing time. The girl at the Sherwin Williams counter said to wait seven days before putting anything on it. If that’s the case then it really should say SOMETHING to that effect on the label or documents online. I couldn’t find anything. We’re playing it safe and waiting the week but I’m surprised that bit of information was left out if it’s so important.

Oh and a side note – we received this as an upgrade because the paint we wanted wasn’t available. I did see the price online – $86. I’m not a professional painter but I’ve painted many things (furniture, walls, trim, closets) and if I wouldn’t pay full price for this. I’ve bought BEHR paint with a primer that does just as well for half of that price. But like I said, I’m no professional – that’s just my opinion.

  2. STAY AWAY FROM THE EMERALD INT/EXT. unless you are Rip Vanwinkle and are feeling sleepy… I tried this junk and have been watching paint dry on the cabinets for 10 feeling days and still shows my fingerprint when I barely touch it… I have used up four times the amount of labor and still got another coat ( will be on my third)… I’m sick of this misleading b.s. because before I bought it , they said up to 3 days cure and was reluctant but they fooled me with there durability crap. .I am a contractor with an account that spent over half a million last year in liquid (epoxies, urathanes, etc) I am taking a door with me to show them, and I prepped just like they said… to be continued

  3. Super frustrated, Painted a coat rack and shelves for my mud room. It’s been two weeks still waiting for it to cure. I called Sherwin Williams the sales clerk so “oh actually that paint takes up to 4 weeks to cure.” Why isn’t this information on the can?

  4. Same problem as everyone else. Not enough information on the can and the sales people are ill-informed. Painting my daughter’s cabinet doors and this stuff does not dry and I’m doing it in the house with heat on and controlled humidity. Worked with better stuff.
