IMPROVE COATINGS ADHESION TO WEATHERED SURFACES WITH

SHERWIN-WILLIAMS NEW PrimeRx PEEL BONDING PRIMER

CLEVELAND – February 26, 2013 – Painting contractors and property managers can save time and money yet still get excellent results — even when dealing with alligatored or peeling coatings — with Sherwin-Williams new PrimeRx™ Peel Bonding Primer, which seals and bonds tightly to sound, marginally prepared or peeling surfaces.

“The saying, ‘time is money’ is especially true when it comes to preparing less-than-perfect surfaces for painting. We know professionals want to deliver top-quality work, and our new PrimeRx Peel Bonding Primer helps painters complete a job faster with less sanding and scraping,” said Karl Schmitt, vice president, marketing, Sherwin-Williams.

High build with excellent filling and bonding characteristics, PrimeRx Peel Bonding Primer is an ideal application for weathered or peeling exteriors, resulting in a more even finish after topcoating compared to traditional primers. It meets the most stringent VOC regulations.

Prime RX

★★★★☆
SW Prime RX is a mid grade bonding primer in my opinion. Pricing is in the middle ($39.00 my cost @ local SW) The original and still the top grade product is Mad Dog Primer. But, at a price tag of $69-$75 per gallon, it is at times prudent to go with the SW knockoff, Prime RX. The bottom of the barrel is the Zinsser Triple thick peel stop which runs $35 per gallon at the Home depot. What I like about MDP (mad dog primer) is that it goes on thicker and is permanently tacky. We refinish a ton of exteriors that have in the past had serious fail issues. When used properly these elastomeric primers are amazing. We make sure our prep work (scraping & sanding) are as fine as possible and spare no expense to make sure our prepared surfaces are better than any of our competitors in our area. I cannot imagine using a bonding primer in order to skimp on prep work . In New England, the wooden exteriors expand and contract greatly. When you use a elastomeric primer with a premium top coat (Aura, Duration, or Emerald) your finish will move with the wood\\\'s movements during winter, spring, summer, and fall.

PrimeRx Review

★★★★☆
It\\\'s a fairly new product but I have used it 4-5 times now and it seems comparable to PeelBond. It tints a little better and is able to match up to the homeowners chosen color.

Not impressed

★★☆☆☆
24-48 hours recoat time does not save time. As the article says: time is money. (Peel Bond, by XIM, is thicker, and ready for topcoat in 3 hours)

  1. I smell load of trouble with this Primer, painters all over America will now use less effort to prep and end up having to re do the job just years later. Hope this trend doesnt catch on.

  2. Have any of you already tried this product? I have heard that you can get a better price from SW. I would like to know if it compares to XIM Peelbond and/or Zinsser Peel Stop triple thick.
