The Art of Social Media
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Guy Kawasaki’s book, “The Art of Social Media” recently.
The first thing I read was this:
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
That’s always been a hard thing for me. I need structure, I like making order out of things. It’s often hard for me to see the “big picture” because I tend to get caught up in the details. I am lucky to have friends and professional relationships with people that are great at “big picture” ideas and can share a vision that I can sink my teeth into, often resulting in very rewarding projects.
This book is for those that need both, the structure and the big picture. Guy Kawasaki is someone who does Social Media right, I have been a reader for a long time, he is personable, informative and genuine. A few of my favorite parts:
Your message and story
Starting on Page 16 he shows how to craft a bio/message that should be shared across platforms. There is so much to be said about transparency these days, your message should be consistent
Taming the content monster
There is a lot of information here! Most deals with bloggers looking for trends and sharing information, but there are a lot of ideas for contractors to develop their own content marketing and be part of a community.
Be Brief, Thankful and Visual
On page 32 he shares some great ways to share content, while being authentic, that can be tough! As well as using Social Media “correctly”.
Haters are going to hate
Anytime you use Social Media, or even reviews, you will run into people that don’t agree. Guy talks about how to handle them, as well as to continue the conversations with followers.
