April is a time of renewal and new life. It is also National Donate Life month. There is a great need for organ and tissue donation; in fact the need vastly exceeds the available donors. According to the Donate Life America website, over 100,000 men, women and children currently need life-saving organ transplants. In 2011, there were 8,127 deceased organ donors and 6,017 living organ donors resulting in 28,535 organ transplants. Perhaps you’re already signed up to donate life; organ, eye and tissue donation via your driver license. Almost every State provides the ability to sign up to be a donor through your Department of Motor Vehicles. Many provide the option to opt-in on the back of your driver license via a check box and adding your signature.
In the fall of 2011 the donation and transplantation communities celebrated reaching 100 million organ, eye and tissue donors. Donate Life America has launched a campaign to register 20 million new donors in 2012. I am glad to see that you are trying to raise awareness. I think it should be mandatory that everyone is a donor. It is such a waste otherwise. The greatest thing we can do on this earth is save another life when ours is over.
