In contracting, there are several business models,  from the sole proprietor who likes to do all the work himself, to the owner who has project managers, office staff and crews and never touches a brush. That is the beauty of being an entrepreneur, you can tailor the business model to fit your style. No matter what size and type of company though, systems are a vital piece of the puzzle, (one reason I am so excited to have Brian Philips join our blog!). From the way we answer the phone to collecting the final check, having systems and routines can keep us from being scattered and wasting precious time. As our business grows and we bring in new people, it is often hard to let go of all the things we do “our way”, another reason for having systems.

Part of the problem in running a contracting business is the reality that the owner usually is wearing too many hats. Trying to do too many things all the time is not very efficient, costs money and profit, and probably holds back the talent of people who work for a business owner. You can’t be really good at anything if you’re doing everything.
