Works but OMG the smell

★★☆☆☆
This product seals wonderfully but the smell is overwhelming. We covered a cooking oil stain on a kitchen ceiling and my painter was supposed to use it on a smoky bathroom ceiling as well. I met him at the job midday and he told me he only did the oil stain as he simply could not stand the smell. Does the product work. YES. Can it be used? Questionable.

Impressive !

We used it to to on a cigarette smoke covered popcorn ceiling. The smell was overpowering at first, (but so was the cigarettes) with the right ventilation and a mask it was manageable. The outcome was very impressive.

Smell

★★☆☆☆
The product's smell was STRONG! Used at a multi-apartment type facility. Blocked out existing odors from previous salon, but odor overwhelmed the first floor of the building for a couple days.

Quality Primer

★★★★★
NorthridgeNorthridge painting has been using this product for its past couple jobs and the results have been great. We work with some insurance and restoration companys and always deal with smoke damage. We used a product called jammer from Deluxe in the past and this product is just as good. I'm curious about the smell factor... Can it be any worse than regular Shellac???

White Synthetic Shellac Primer

★★★★☆
Do not use without extremely generous and vigorous ventilation and/or a respirator. I put a single coat on a 14x14' kitchen ceiling with open windows and cross ventilation: had a hard time finishing because I was so impaired and still have a slamming headache here 6 hours later. Got to this page looking for medical advice on synthetic shellac poisoning.

My drywall texture guy used this to solve a skim coat bubbling issue without asking. It has been four months with the windows open, and two coats of 'VOC blocking' Harmony paint and the smell is still so headache inducing in my son's bedroom that we haven't been able to move in. SERIOUSLY TERRIBLE PRODUCT. No clue what else to do besides tear out the plaster walls that were coated with it.

Synthetic shellac

It worked on my badly cigarette smoke stained house. Other primers didn't. It does not clean up easily and smell is strong. Overall I am happy with it. It does what it say it will.

  1. I’m painting corble/brackets for a portico so it’s a relatively small project. I didn’t think the smell was so bad. The dried paint smells oddly sweet. My issue is the brushstrokes won’t lay down

    1. I need help with the same brush stroke issue. I am primer kitchen cabinets and I did a test patch and the very expensive paint does not fill in the brush strokes. I have even sanded a bit to see if that helps, but seems counter intuitive if I need the bonding power. Help.
